On February 14th, the local civil authorities by popular petition made a vow of thanksgiving to the Mother of God of Vallivana for releasing the town from the terrible plague in 1672. It consisted on a solemn nine-day-long festivity every six years. From then onwards, the vow has only been broken during the Spanish Succession War and the Napoleonic Wars and, if nothing wrong happens, it will continue in 2012, 2018 and 2028.
Therefore, each day of the nine-day-long festivities is sponsored by a guild representing several socioeconomic sectors of the town, which have been changing along the evolution of the town. The guilds at the moment are: Clergy, Town Hall, Old People, Farmers, Morellan-Catalan Colony, Absent Morellan Colony; Trademen, Industrialists and Transporters; the Merchants, the Arts and Crafts association, and the Youth association.
The Sexenni is nowadays celebrated the second fortnight of August. Thursday afternoon is the entrance of the Colonies, an act where Morellan people living far away because of emigration get together symbolically with those living in the town.
On Friday, once all the Morellan people are here, the pilgrimage towards Vallivana starts. They set off on Friday, sleep at Vallivana and return on Saturday with the Image of the Mother of God of Vallivana.
In order to receive this visit, the church used to be decorated with flowers, later some places around the town and some streets were decorated too. Nowadays all the streets the Image passes along the town are decorated with paper work.
One of the most special moments is when the Mother of God comes into the Gate of the Studies. Having set the Image on her platform, the procession of entrance towards the church starts. On Sunday the general procession takes place which almost all citizens take part in: dances, biblical characters and saints according to an established order. On Monday evening an emotionally-charged event occurs: the rosary. It dates back to 1922 and it goes along the upper streets of the town.
The other days of the festivities follow a similar pattern: high mass, with a distinguished choir and preacher, then a procession, where the members of each guilt walk along the main streets with the dances and other traditional elements of the Sexenni. In the afternoon the guilds organize concerts or activities for the children, in the evening there is a ball.
L'any de Festes la Mare de Déu baixa a l'ermita a l'octubre, en una altra rogativa, després d'haver visitat els malalts del poble.
