Royal Convent of Sant Francesc
"There are cities gifted with skyline, their silhouette drawn over the space. If I had to choose two European skylines, I would take San Geminiano in Tuscany and Morella." Manuel Vázquez Montalbán.
This little medieval city, placed in the middle of the old Kingdom of Aragón, in the centre of the territories which comprise Comunitat Valenciana, Catalonia and Aragón, in the mountains of the Mediterranean arc, rides between the respect for a glorious past and the updating of modernity.
The city, the natural surroundings and overall, its people, are the keys to achieve the revival in the new century, after years of failures to adapt to changes.
The traveller faces an experience in a gothic surrounding with amazing monuments such as Santa Maria, a valuous example of a pre-eminence time when Europe was born from burgs and villages and the first urban societies were established with workshops and transformation economies in the time of humanism.
Sant Miquel towers
The walled city cannot be understood without its natural surroundings. The forests, the nature worked by men, walled enclosures to profit even the last meter of hard soil.
People are our strength. The effort and courage of Morellan people give us hope to preserve our cultural patrimony and to broaden new horizons.
2006 is a year of Sexenni. With loyalty to our ancestors during more than three centuries, we accomplish with the vow of celebrating amazing festivities every six years. The Sexenni is a voyage to our culture, tradition and identity. Over a year, Morellan people work for this event which transforms the city. The Sexenni decorates Morella and shakes it to the rhythm of traditional dances and songs in an atmosphere of happiness and colour.
