Route 1 – Morella’s Urban Area and Surroundings
This route covers urban and transitional wildlife, offering the opportunity to observe species adapted to human and peri-urban environments.
This area provides shelter for many birds that have taken advantage of the protection and resources offered by urban settlements. In summer, Morella’s walls host one of the largest and most striking common swift colonies in the Valencian Community. Around the castle and in some houses, red-billed choughs nest. House sparrows, black redstarts, and spotless starlings occupy the town’s rooftops.
On the local trail surrounding the walls and in the small woodland next to La Alameda, known as Els Pinets, you can find bird species characteristic of all birdwatching itineraries. In Morella’s skies, it is very common to see groups of griffon vultures flying at very low altitudes, along with various species of eagles, kites, and falcons.
